Inauguration of 150 years’ celebration of SXCS: It is a matter of great pride for all Xaverians that St. Xavier’s will complete 150 years on 16th January 2010. Our institution has survived the passing of imperialism, the struggle for independence and the tumultuous times that accompanied the birth of our beloved country. Through the changing times the principles of our beloved Jesuit Priests have remained the same and have strengthened our solidarity, belief and attachment to our ‘alma mater’ and our resolve to give back to society at large. The inaugural programme of the 150 years’ celebration was held on 21st January, 2009. The Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh had confirmed his participation in the programme, but unfortunately, due to sudden illness, which resulted in a heart bypass surgery, Dr. Singh could not attend the function.
The Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mr. Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee attended the function as Chief Guest. The Mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Mr. Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya and Speaker of West Bengal Assembly were also present. The Primary and Senior school boys of SXCS gave a performance which was well appreciated by the audience. The college students also drew applause with their cultural performance. Subsequent to the inaugural programme, Alsoc had a fellowship programme which was well attended by members of Alsoc, SXCAA and Rev. Jesuit Fathers. Alsoc took the opportunity to hand over beautifully designed mementos to Rev Father Rector, Rev Father Principal of the college and our President Rev Father Headmaster. We also felicitated some young college students who had worked tirelessly alongside us to organize the arrangements for the Prime Minister’s visit. The Vyas brothers Sandip and Sanjeev kept the audience enthralled and involved on the dance floor with their music.
Post the Inaugural Programme, Alsoc had organized three separate deliberations by eminent persons which were thought provoking and well appreciated. These were on different topics as follows :
